How we calculate this
Cake batter is scaled by total pan area when the intended layer depth remains similar.
The math
- Round area = π × radius²
- Rectangle area = length × width
- Ingredient multiplier = destination area ÷ source area
Worked example
Moving from a 9-inch round (63.6 in²) to a 9×13-inch pan (117 in²) produces a multiplier of about 1.84.

The total pan area is close, so the overall batter amount can remain similar. Divide it evenly among three pans and begin checking early because thinner layers bake faster.
Can I bake a 9x13 cake recipe as a half-sheet cake?
A half-sheet pan has substantially more area, so scale the batter up to preserve thickness. Do not overfill the pan, and expect the baking time to change.
Should I scale frosting when I change cake pan sizes?
Usually. Base the amount on exposed surface area and the number of layers. Tall cakes and piped decorations need more frosting than a simple batter-area multiplier suggests.
